Editing and proofreading

FINAL STEPS TOWARDS A READY-TO-PRINT TEXT

The linguistic skills and capabilities of translators are as diverse as the translators themselves. Translating a text calls for a high degree of creativity and the ability to express yourself well. In addition to finding the right wording, researching suitable specialised terms, building translation memories and using customers’ glossaries, linguists must keep an eye on correct spelling, grammar and punctuation.

PROOFREADING

A proofreader eliminates objective mistakes. The text is checked for slips and typing errors, as well as spelling, punctuation and grammar. The content and style of writing are not revised in this case! Proofreading on its own makes sense if a text is already linguistically sound and the content is accurately rendered.

EDITING

Editing includes proofreading, the improvement of spelling, punctuation and grammar and, if necessary, improvements to content and style. The editor checks, among other things, whether the text is clearly written and easy to understand, and whether the tone is well suited to the target group.

POST-TYPESETTING CHECK

Before printing, a post-typesetting check is carried out. Texts that have already been proofread or edited and have been typeset in their final layout are given a final check for size, position, hyphenation and completeness and then approved for printing.
